As a local authority maintained school we have a governing body. The governing body is made up of co-opted, local authority and parent governors who are responsible for the strategic direction of the school.

Governors ensure that teaching and learning is high quality, that our statutory duties are met and that leadership is effective.

Our Governing body is made up of a range of skilled and enthusiastic volunteers, representing local government, the community, elected parents and members of school teaching and support staff.

Behaviour and Written Statement of Principles

At Brougham Street we believe that positive behaviour is built through warm, respectful relationships, clear expectations and consistent support. We want every child to feel safe, valued, included and ready to learn.

Our approach to behaviour supports our safeguarding responsibilities and reflects the principles set out in current statutory guidance for behaviour in schools and early years settings.

Our Principles:

Every child has the right to learn and play in a safe, secure and orderly environment.
We provide an environment where children feel emotionally and physically safe, with clear and age-appropriate expectations for behaviour.

Every member of our nursery community should be treated with respect and dignity.
We model kindness, courtesy, empathy and respect in our interactions with children, families, staff and visitors. Adults are positive role models and help children to develop these values through everyday experiences.

High standards of behaviour are expected and explicitly taught.
We recognise that young children are still developing their understanding of emotions, relationships and appropriate behaviour. We teach children what positive behaviour looks like through modelling, encouragement, stories, discussion, routines and consistent adult responses.

Positive behaviour is recognised and encouraged.
We use praise, encouragement and positive reinforcement to help children understand the impact of their choices and to develop confidence, self-regulation and responsibility.

Any consequences or sanctions are fair, consistent, proportionate and appropriate to the child's age and stage of development.
Where behaviour does not meet our expectations, staff respond calmly and consistently. Our focus is on helping children understand what has happened, recognise the impact of their actions and learn more appropriate ways to respond.

Our approach supports inclusion.
We recognise that behaviour can be influenced by a child's individual needs, stage of development, communication, emotional wellbeing, SEND, disability or other vulnerabilities. We make reasonable adjustments and provide appropriate support so that all children can participate successfully in nursery life.

Bullying, discrimination, harassment and harmful behaviour are not acceptable.
We take concerns about bullying, discriminatory behaviour, harassment or any form of harmful or inappropriate behaviour seriously. Concerns will be addressed promptly, sensitively and in accordance with our safeguarding procedures.

Safeguarding is at the heart of our approach to behaviour.
Changes in behaviour or patterns of behaviour may sometimes indicate that a child is experiencing difficulties or may be at risk of harm. Staff remain alert to these signs and follow our safeguarding procedures whenever a concern arises.

We work in partnership with parents and carers.
We believe that positive relationships between nursery and home are essential. We communicate openly with parents and carers about behaviour and work together to support children's emotional development, wellbeing and positive behaviour.

Behaviour expectations apply throughout the nursery community.
Children are supported to understand that our expectations for kindness, respect and safety apply during nursery sessions, activities, trips and other settings connected with the nursery. Where behaviour outside nursery has a direct impact on the safety or wellbeing of our community, we will respond appropriately.

Suspension, exclusion and restrictive intervention will be used only where necessary and proportionate.
Suspension or exclusion from nursery will only be considered in response to serious or persistent behaviour that places the safety, wellbeing or education of the child or others at significant risk, and will always be considered as a last resort.

Any decision to suspend or exclude a child will be made by the Headteacher in accordance with our Behaviour Policy, safeguarding responsibilities and relevant statutory guidance. The Headteacher will consider the individual circumstances of the child, including any SEND, disability, additional needs or other vulnerabilities, before making a decision.

Where appropriate, we will work closely with parents and carers and seek to identify supportive strategies and interventions before exclusion is considered. Any exclusion will be lawful, reasonable, proportionate and for the appropriate duration.

Any use of reasonable force or other restrictive intervention will be necessary, lawful and proportionate, and will be carried out in accordance with relevant guidance and the nursery's policies. It will never be used as a punishment.

Supporting Positive Behaviour

We understand that young children are learning to manage strong emotions, communicate their needs and develop self-control. We therefore seek to understand the reasons behind behaviour rather than simply responding to the behaviour itself.

Staff use consistent, nurturing approaches to help children:

  • understand boundaries and expectations;
  • recognise and express their feelings safely;
  • develop self-regulation and resilience;
  • resolve disagreements appropriately;
  • understand how their behaviour affects others;
  • develop empathy, kindness and respect; and
  • make positive choices.

Where a child's behaviour presents an ongoing concern, we will work with the child and their parents or carers to understand their individual needs and agree appropriate strategies and support.

Our Commitment

Our behaviour approach is designed to promote children's safety, wellbeing, inclusion and ability to learn and thrive. We are committed to ensuring that behaviour is managed fairly, consistently and compassionately, while maintaining clear boundaries that protect every member of our nursery community.

Our full Behaviour Policy sets out the procedures and strategies used to put these principles into practice and should be read alongside our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, SEND Policy and other relevant policies.

This written statement of principles is reviewed regularly and updated where necessary to reflect changes in statutory guidance and the needs of our nursery community.
