Welcome to the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) section of our website. In this section you will find out how we identify children with SEND and the provision that we put in place to help to meet their needs.

The Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator in school is Mrs Karen Daggett. If you have any questions about SEND then please do not hesitate to come into school and speak to her. She is based here at Brougham Street every Thursday. Appointments can be booked to see her through the main office.

At Brougham Street Community Nursery School, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive setting that values the unique abilities of every child. We understand that each child is different and may require additional support to thrive in their learning environment. That's why we are committed to providing a nurturing and supportive atmosphere where every child can reach their full potential.

Our dedicated team of staff members are not only well-trained but are also highly experienced in supporting children with special educational needs. We believe in the importance of ongoing professional development to ensure that our staff members are equipped with the latest strategies and techniques to support all children effectively.

At Brougham Street Community Nursery School, we recognise the importance of collaboration and teamwork in meeting the diverse needs of our students. We have established strong links with various professionals, including speech therapists, portage, Carers Resource, and paediatric physiotherapists. By working together as part of a multidisciplinary team, we can provide comprehensive support tailored to each child's individual needs.

Whether your child requires additional support with communication, sensory processing, or any other aspect of their development, you can trust that they will receive the personalised attention and care they deserve at Brougham Street Community Nursery School. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every child feels valued, respected, and supported on their learning journey.

Meet Our Speech and Language Therapist – Claire Mills

We are incredibly fortunate to have Claire Mills, our own HCPC-registered Speech and Language Therapist, working with us through the amazing provision All Things Therapy who are based in Skipton.

Claire brings a wealth of experience from both the NHS and educational settings, having worked with adults, young people, and children across a wide range of speech, language, communication, and cognitive needs. Her expertise spans from neurological conditions and stroke recovery to speech sound disorders, autism, and specific learning difficulties in children.

Claire’s approach is centred on the individual. She combines both impairment-based and functional therapy methods, focusing on each child’s strengths while supporting their areas of need. She is passionate about working closely with our staff members and our families in order to equip others to carry over therapy strategies into everyday life—ensuring progress continues beyond the therapy room.

Claire also has a special interest in using technology in therapy and supporting children who benefit from alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) methods.

We are proud to have Claire as part of our team, helping to ensure that every child has the best possible start in their communication journey.  Claire Mills

I think that my child may have additional needs. What should I do?

All children develop at completely different rates and no one child is the same. If you have any questions about the development of your child then please do not hesitate to contact Karen Daggett, our SENDCO. She is very experienced, not only as a qualified teacher and a deputy headteacher, but she also has many years experience as a SENDCO.

Karen often meets with families to discuss any questions or concerns that they may have. She has a wealth of experience and can offer guidance and can also signpost families to professionals and external agencies for extra support and next steps.
